Île Sainte-Hélène Pavilion: Rehabilitation work to continue during the summer

Due to its broad scope and specialized nature, rehabilitation work on the Île Sainte-Hélène Pavilion will continue throughout the summer of 2026.

A major undertaking to preserve an architectural gem

This large-scale project involves the complete reconstruction of the pavilion’s exterior walls, including the following work:

  • Re-application of the stucco
  • Replacement of the windows
  • Restoration of the mosaics
  • Restoration of the bronze bust of Jacques Cartier and commemorative plaques

To ensure the work can be completed safely and with a high level of care and attention, the pavilion’s four towers will remain covered with protective tarps all summer long.

Impacts on active mobility for summer 2026

Due to the ongoing work:

  • The sidewalk connecting Montréal and the South Shore will be closed.
  • The pedestrian crossing built underneath the pavilion will remain closed.
  • Pedestrians should follow the signs to the multipurpose path to safely cross the bridge.
  • The bronze bust of Jacques Cartier remains accessible via the multipurpose path, subject to certain conditions.

The measures in place are designed to ensure the safety of users while allowing work to continue.

A sustainable investment

Carried out with a careful eye to maintaining the building’s architectural integrity, this work will ensure the long-term sustainability of the Île Sainte-Hélène Pavilion, which serves as a key structural component of the Jacques-Cartier Bridge in addition to being an iconic heritage landmark.
