Work in the Clément Bridge sector
What kind of work will you be doing in 2024 in the Clément Bridge sector?

From June to August, we are going to rebuild and then repave the roadbed in the on-ramp of the Bonaventure Expy. toward the Samuel De Champlain (SDCH) Bridge (the “courbe des américains”).

From August to November, we will be repairing the girders and cleaning the drainage system on the Clément Bridge.

 

What impacts will this work have on residents of Île des Sœurs?

The work from August to November will involve closing access from Île des Sœurs to the Bonaventure Expressway, for 75 days, and a detour route will be set up via Gaétan-Laberge Boulevard.

What kind of work will you be doing in 2024 on the elevated lanes?

From June to November, we will mainly be repairing the concrete slab on a portion of the deck and adding a higher-performance waterproofing membrane. To improve the structure’s service life, the mini-pier caps will also be removed and replaced with systems that are more effective and easier to maintain.

Reconstruction of the Bonaventure Expressway
What is the Bonaventure Expressway reconstruction project?

The Bonaventure Expressway was built in 1966. It is reaching the end of its service life and must be reconstructed. JCCBI will reconfigure the expressway into a boulevard with a 2+1 configuration in both directions. This project also includes improvements to the sector with a green corridor along the shoreline that will give residents closer access to the river. Two 2.5-km dedicated active mobility (cycling and pedestrian) paths will be added, as the sector does not currently have this type of infrastructure.

Will the bicycle path for this project be connected to the bicycle path network on the Samuel De Champlain Bridge and the Estacade? 

The path will be linked to the bicycle path network that is connected to the Île des Sœurs Bridge. This will allow cyclists coming from the Samuel De Champlain Bridge to reach downtown Montreal via the bicycle path that will be constructed along the boulevard.

What is the schedule of the project?

Phase 1 will include the deconstruction of the Île des Sœurs bypass bridge and its approaches. This work began in fall 2023 and will end at the end of 2024.

Phase 2 will include the section between Gaétan-Laberge Boulevard and the Victoria Bridge, with development work to begin in 2025 and end in 2029:

  • 2024: Preparatory work to stabilize the shoreline between the Clément Bridge and Victoria Bridge (limited impacts on traffic).
  • 2025 – 2029: Reconstruction of traffic lanes and green corridor development.

When are you planning to deconstruct the IDS bypass bridge?

Work to deconstruct the Île des Sœurs bypass bridge will be held from November 2023 to December 2024. The land will be rehabilitated during the reconstruction of the expressway. This aspect is still being studied.

Why is the same work done on the expressway every year?

The Bonaventure Expressway was built in 1967 and is nearing the end of its service life. Pending its reconstruction as an urban boulevard in the coming years and to keep the structure reliable and safe, regular maintenance work is required particularly on the elevated lanes.

Why are no workers around when work is being done on the elevated lanes?

Most of the time, work in the sector of the elevated lanes is done on the box beams underneath the road surface. Since workers are under the lanes, the lanes must be closed so that traffic does not to impact the work.

What is the Solution Bonaventure Project?

The Solution Bonaventure is an environmental project to protect the St. Lawrence river against ontaminant runoff from groundwater in the Bonaventure Sector.

For 100 years, the shore of the St. Lawrence river was used as a landfill for industrial and household waste that has caused major contamination problems.

The Solution Bonaventure was launched in June 2016 and has been operating since 2018. The goal was to implement concrete solutions to prevent contamninants from flowing into the river.
